ERP
A proven treatment for OCD and anxiety that helps individuals break free from cycles of fear, uncertainty, and compulsive behaviors.
WHAT IS ERP?
Most people experience unwanted thoughts from time to time. They may wonder if they left the stove on, worry about something they said, or imagine a frightening possibility. For individuals struggling with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related anxiety disorders, however, these thoughts can become persistent, distressing, and difficult to dismiss.
In response to these thoughts, many people find themselves engaging in behaviors designed to reduce anxiety or create certainty. They may repeatedly check, seek reassurance, "logic something out" excessively, avoid situations, mentally review events, research endlessly online, pray excessively, wash repeatedly, or perform other rituals intended to make themselves feel safe. Unfortunately, these strategies often strengthen the cycle rather than resolve it.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is considered the gold-standard treatment for OCD. Rather than helping individuals eliminate unwanted thoughts, ERP helps them change the way they respond to those thoughts.
The goal of ERP is not to remove anxiety from your life. Instead, it helps you build confidence in your ability to tolerate uncertainty, discomfort, and fear without relying on compulsions or avoidance. Through gradual and intentional practice, the brain begins to learn that anxiety can rise and fall on its own and that uncertainty does not have to control your choices.
Many people with OCD spend years searching for certainty. Ironically, lasting healing often comes from learning to stop chasing certainty and instead learning to live comfortably with the unknown.
ERP can be effective for many forms of OCD and anxiety, including contamination fears, harm OCD, relationship OCD (ROCD), scrupulosity and religious OCD, health anxiety, checking behaviors, intrusive thoughts, and perfectionism-related concerns.
My approach to ERP is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to the individual. Together, we create exercises that challenge OCD while remaining aligned with your goals, values, and readiness for change. The process can be challenging at times, but clients are often surprised by how capable they become once they stop letting fear make the decisions.
You do not have to remain trapped in a cycle of obsession, fear, and compulsion. With the right tools and support, it is possible to build a life guided by your values rather than your anxiety.
